The Problem

Developers wanted a place to talk shop that felt native to their world instead of generic social platforms like X (Twitter). Conversations on this site reference feeling fatigued by 'bullshit on x' and preferring a cleaner, developer-centric timeline. Users post about PHP vulnerabilities, GitLab CVEs, outages and patching work, suggesting the audience is engineers who want a dedicated space for security news, banter and community support. The site frames posts as 'commits' and replies as part of a 'commit graph', signaling a product built specifically around developer culture and metaphors rather than repurposing a general social app.

The Solution

/dev/null is a social network where posts are modeled as commits displayed in an X-style three-column layout with the timeline rendered as a commit graph, and users sign in with GitHub. Users can post, quote, reply, follow, star commits, and receive notifications, with a search function (Ctrl+K) and a settings/profile area. The frontend was originally contributed by a community member via a GitHub pull request and has been iterated on heavily by the community in a short period. A third-party developer built and shared an unofficial mobile client ('null-pointer') for Android with an APK release, with iOS pending Apple review, and another community member (Simon Hamp) is mentioned as working on a similar app, with users suggesting collaboration to avoid duplicate efforts.
