The Problem

People who need to capture full-page screenshots or record browser tabs often rely on tools that upload captures to a server, require an account, add watermarks, or track usage. This raises privacy concerns for anyone capturing sensitive dashboards, internal tools, or pages for incident reports and documentation. Developers and scripts or AI agents that want to automate screenshot capture typically depend on a hosted capture service rather than running locally. The text frames these as the gaps OpenScreenShot addresses: no account, no upload, no watermark, and no telemetry.

The Solution

OpenScreenShot is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that captures full-page screenshots, visible-area captures, or a selected region, then lets users annotate with arrows, shapes, and text before exporting as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, or copying to clipboard. It can also record a browser tab (Chrome only), zoom in on clicks, and export as MP4 or WebM. All capture, editing, and export runs locally in the browser with no account, no upload, and no watermark, using permissions like activeTab, scripting, and storage scoped narrowly to the capture workflow. A separate npm package, openscreenshot, lets developers or AI agents capture screenshots from scripts or a local MCP server (capture_screenshot tool), using a local Chrome installation without a hosted service, intended for use cases like CI pipelines and incident documentation.
