Particularity, Inc.
Particularity builds a platform that helps government regulators detect and investigate consumer protection violations
The Problem
Regulators responsible for consumer protection have to find violations like hidden fees, fake urgency tactics, misleading ads, and subscriptions that are hard to cancel, but these issues are scattered across countless websites and typically only surface after consumers file complaints. Reviewing company practices such as checkout fees, renewal disclosures, countdown timers, and cancellation flows by hand is slow and hard to do at scale. Without systematic monitoring, harmful practices like charges after cancellation or fees not shown at checkout can persist before being caught.
The Solution
Particularity runs proactive checks of live websites at scale, based on consumer protection law, and saves screenshots to an auditable evidence database. It can test subscription cancellation flows, catch fake urgency tactics like resetting countdown timers, compare advertised prices to checkout prices, check whether renewal terms appear before billing information is entered, and compare ad claims against contract terms. The platform also triages complaints by running a first-pass investigation augmented with public data, analyzes patterns across data sources, and estimates consumer harm to help prioritize cases. Findings are linked to case evidence and legal elements, with staff review built into the workflow and a full record of evidence collection and decisions.
