The Problem

People who budget by checking account balance or calendar month run into trouble because a bank balance includes money already owed to rent, utilities and savings, and a monthly budget holds back funds that aren't due yet, creating an artificially tight and inaccurate 'left to spend' figure. This mismatch is worse for anyone paid biweekly, semi-monthly, weekly, or irregularly (freelancers, gig workers, commission earners, hourly staff) because bills rarely line up with calendar months. The page gives a concrete example: a $3,842 checking balance that is actually only $576 safe to spend over 8 days once bills, savings and already-spent money are accounted for. Existing monthly budgeting tools reportedly hold back money (e.g. $278 in the example) that isn't needed yet, making budgets feel tighter than reality and prone to breaking mid-month when a bill timing shifts.

The Solution

Pocket Runway calculates a single daily safe-to-spend number by taking available money, subtracting obligations due before the next paycheck, protecting savings goals and a minimum buffer, subtracting what's already spent, and dividing the remainder by the days left in the pay period. Users set their pay cadence (weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, monthly or irregular) and enter bills once; each cycle the app fences off only what's due in that window and defers the rest to the paycheck that actually covers it. Named features include a 'Runway Reset' payday closeout, forward pay-period forecasting, sinking funds for irregular costs like taxes or repairs, purchase simulation to preview how a spend affects the daily allowance, a calendar/trends view, manual transaction entry or CSV import (bank syncing not yet live), net worth tracking, and an AI assistant that can answer questions like 'Can I afford $300 this weekend?' grounded in the user's financial model. It also includes a free, no-account daily spending allowance calculator that runs in the browser to demonstrate the math before signup.
